“What’s your disability?
You look normal.”
Recently, I had the privilege of attending the Melbourne premiere of Changing Track—a powerful documentary that dives into the lives of Australia’s Paralympic cyclists. This isn’t just a film about sport; it’s a story of courage, transformation, and the relentless pursuit of possibility.
Changing Track follows athletes of different ages and backgrounds, each with a unique journey shaped by life-changing events. Through candid storytelling, the film reveals the grit, commitment, and sheer determination behind their Paralympic dreams. But it goes deeper—showing the everyday challenges these athletes face and the resilience that carries them forward.
I’ll admit, there were moments that moved me to tears, made me laugh, and had me cheering along with the audience. The Q&A session afterward with three Paralympians and the two brothers who created the film was equally inspiring.
One message stood out:
“Just give it a go—if you don’t try, you’ll never know.”
For these athletes, medals were secondary to the sense of belonging and purpose they found in the cycling community.
A poignant reminder came from an athlete who shared her frustration with being asked, “What’s your disability? You look normal.” It’s a powerful call to remember that not all disabilities are visible.
I encourage you to see Changing Track. You’ll learn about Paralympic classifications, cycling events, and most importantly, you’ll leave feeling inspired by the strength and spirit of these incredible Australians.
